What Are Ice Dams?
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of your roof, preventing melting snow from properly draining off. Think of it as a frozen barrier that traps water behind it. While they might look like harmless winter decorations, ice dams can lead to significant problems for your roof and home's structure.What Causes Ice Dams on Roofs?
Ice dams form when three conditions exist:- Snow accumulates on your roof
- The temperature at the upper portion of your roof is above 32°F
- The lower portion of your roof remains below freezing
